We've been discussing in various calls and threads all the ways our privacy is being invaded. I started making a list of various words which come up. They have overlapping and different definitions and one of the things that keeps happening is that folks switch words on us, on others, in order to obfuscate the core issue.
It might make sense to gather the words associated with what we're interested in and develop definitions and show how they relate to the 4th Amendment. Words I have thus far are: wiretap eavesdrop record sweep surveillance

Help me plan list of legislators for a call-in day to "get FISA right" to take place on June 17, the 37th anniversary of the Watergate break-in. Can we have a weekend conference call on any date but May 16th or 31st? (I'm attending single-payer healthcare informational symposia those days.)

i'm not suggesting we drop Obama completely, but the sort of call numbers we can generate DO sway members of the legislative side.
Getting FISA itself fixed is good, we ccan also be looking at the places gthe surveillance laws needed new privacy protections. I have location tracking in particular in mind.

FUSION CENTERS
Action you could take. I suggest you contact your State Government Representatives and demand: Honorable Representative; I demand you immediately begin writing statues and policy to control the FUSION mechanism affecting this state. Whereas FUSION centers have been collecting vast amounts of personal information, And whereas much of this information is proven to be false and error prone, And whereas this information can cause gross damage to individuals liberty and livelihood, Be it resolved that the State develop statues and policy limiting how this information is used and protecting this information from disclosure. Be it resolved that individuals may view and contest their individual information. Be it further resolved that information gained without due process be deleted from all records and data bases. drafted by Bruce Eggum http://tinyurl.com/detrpl |

Who's Spying in Your Neighborhood?
Fusion Centers collect and share information with local, state and federal law enforcement, and increasingly, with the military and the private sector. Although information sharing is legitimate and often necessary for law enforcement, the Fusion Centers are operating with little oversight at a time when new technology, government powers and zeal in the "war on terrorism" are combining to threaten our privacy at an unprecedented level and turn America into a surveillance society. http://www.aclu.org/privacy/gen/fusion_map/ We need to strengthen STATE law and confront FUSION http://www.aclu.org/privacy/gen/32966pub20071205.html

I'm concerned that the illegal Federal Reserve (privately owned nongovernment "central" bank formed by cabal during Christmas break of 1917's Congress, now in control of US economics) and the executive branch of government could be in collusion to both set monetary policy and confiscate businesses for "failure" and a supposed threat against the "public good." Does no one see this slippery slope as intended consequences of predictable events?

The question is at the end, and my suggestion is that the shorter the Q the better the A. So I would rephrase like this:
Before you were elected, you promised your attorney general would review domestic surveillance policy. What changes can we expect?

From the Senator Feingold listening session. I was the last of 72 people in the room and so did not get close enough to video. I did talk to staff and we are free to video at any listening session. If we want to make a video exclusive of the session, we have to make arrangements with staff during press time prior to the meeting...they encouraged us to do so.
Regarding FISA: Senator Feingold is hoping that FISA will be clarified through the courts, but if it is not, favors introducing legislation to protect communications of US citizens. His example was that when he gets Blackberry messages from his daughter in London or if a soldier texts from overseas, all the content goes to government monitoring agencies,,,,,"and that's just not the America we want." I am not sure if any cases pending (ACLU?). If we had model legislation, he would look at it. Jean

Because of timeliness the original FISA allowed action providing a warrant had been applied for. If the warrant was not allowed by court, the information and action was rescinded and deleted. The people / agency who took the wrong action were disciplined. I think this is realistic and still protects our privacy and security. The original FISA is a good document and could be reinstated.

The current plan is
getfisaright.wordpress.com - March 4 bloggers.change.org/ideas_patriotact - March 4 www.emergentchaos.com - March 4 "Vox Libertas" at Blogger, Vox, LiveJournal and MySpace - March 5 www.dailykos.com - Sunday or Monday. Anyone got a preference? Do people have opinions on time of day or day of week to maximize discussion?

The goal here was 300-400 words summarizing the ideas of last summer as a jumping off point for a discussion to be held in various blogs. I've done about 325 words in the main body and the list of links from the blog discussions of last summer add about 100 more.
The next step should be to review, edit and refine this. After that, my intention is to post it in GFR's blog and to cross post it to Daily Kos and other appropriate blogs (such as Change.org, my various blogs and those of the other cited bloggers). I am hoping to pull Wes and Paul into the discussion as well as David Kris and the folks over at Emergent Chaos, if I can. What exactly would constitute getting FISA right is something we can focus on between now and the time when US PATRIOT is up for renewal.

I think "Dear Senator Feingold" might suffice for the salutation. (I think that's the proper etiquette.) It might also be good to be more specific the first time FISA is mentioned, i.e., "The FISA Amendments Act." And in the third sentence of that first paragraph I would suggest something like "to revise FISA to protect the Fourth Amendment rights of U.S. citizens." (I apologize if it seems like I'm suggesting too much rewriting; I compulsively edit everything I write and it's hard to break the habit.)

Senator Feingold has been talking up accountability with regard to what he openly refers to as crimes of Bush-Cheney et al. Let's ask him to ask the new Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor. Let's ask him whether they are above the law.
