I've missed or missed out on the conference calls so if this been there, done that please ignore. These are the questions I would ask myself: Who can we working with on the committee staff? What is the Chairman's position? If he's anti-, do we have a member who can be our champion? Who do we know at JoD? Do we know who is staffing this at DoJ? Do we know who the WH's point person is for this? Is it Legislative Affairs? NSC? CoS? Do we have the names of the reporters working this story? Are there advocacy groups who's collective brain we can pick? Is there anyone group/org/PAC that has the exact same goal? If they are better funded can we leverage our effort by offering our help in addition to doing what we are doing? That's off the top so If all these are obvious, then chalk it up to great minds thinking alike. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think any progress is going to come from the WH until they get HCR through. But hitting those congressmen on the committee with phone calls to their office is still the best way to ring their bell. Maybe you've already contacted the hometown papers editorial board in their districts to see how many we can get to write an editorial. "It will take an act of patriotism to fix the problems with the Patriot Act" Good Luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. @mgill006

I agree that the NPP paragraph should be scrapped. However, if it is decided that we should reference the NPP, the intro should be short and to the point. Perhaps something like...
"Congratulations on winning the highly esteemed NPP; we proudly believe that you are a man on the cusp of greatness." Also, imho, the second paragraph should be scrapped and it's points should be inserted into other sentences as needed. Perhaps the first paragraph in this open letter should be like the third paragraph in the current draft... try something direct to the purpose of this letter... without a long rambling preamble... perhaps... "Patriot Act and FISA reform are once again before Congress; now is the perfect time to follow through on your commitment to preserve American civil liberties and to curb executive branch abuses against the US Constitution." Once the first sentence is settled, it will set the pace and tone of the remaining letter.

In actuality I feel just that way, betrayed. But to put it in a letter seems nasty - remember General Betrayus? That's a mighty strong word - suggest changing it to "disappoint us".

I agree with ddearborn and suggest adopting her suggestions.
The tone of the letter seems derogatory to the President. We should be able to site concerns than suggest changes politely.

Lose the Nobel Peace Prize line, it adds nothing to the discussion, and it takes up valuable space. The second paragraph that references the response to the first open letter is a much stronger beginning.
Lose the word "horrific" - we don't want to come across as melodramatic. The part about having a hard time seeing behind the scenes work... please. Of course you have a hard time seeing behind the scenes work. That sentence just made me laugh out loud. We urge you to live up to the "morals" of this campaign? Please. We're not talking to the Bush administration here. He made campaign pledges, not "morals." Overall, this letter just needs to be tightened up. Really tightened up.

Dear President Obama, I've taken a few minutes this morning to think about the wording of this letter and offer my suggestions with openness and kindness. The opening of this letter could work, but it feels as if it is a bit dismissive in tone. "Certainly puts you in good company" seems to border on flippancy if read from that angle. "Certainly" creates this tone here. I've reworked the letter and hope that others will continue to shape and direct this important communication. The recent announcement of your Nobel Peace Prize was a reassuring gesture from the world that the global community is listening, hoping, and caring about the future of America again. Today, we write to urge you to honor the spirit of peace and democracy by changing your stance on FISA. With FISA reform in Congress once more, the time is right for change. "Yes we can" protect civil liberties and restore Americans' faith in a government that supports rather than surveils. We understand why your administration worked behind the scenes with Senator Sessions to weaken privacy and civil liberties protections during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Patriot Act reform, but we feel that this issue is more important than reaching across partisan lines, more important than appeasement. When you are weak on civil liberties, the bedrock upon which our democracy is built, you let down the public that worked hard for your election. We expect such practices from the previous administration. Your oath to protect the Constitution is important to the American people. Please follow through on your promises. From here, the letter should detail the past history of the FISA discussions, the Justice Act results, and what we hope Obama will do in the future. Does anyone have these as talking points? Overall, our letter's tone should match Obama's. Best wishes all, Linda

"Congratulations on your Nobel Peace Prize," sounds too flat and like Obama owns the NPP. Perhaps, "Congratulation for winning the NPP", might sound better... emphasizing the contest and being victorious.
"it certainly puts you in good company," sounds too pals-y to my tin ear. Perhaps try something like, "You are now in the pantheon with Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela {and another that Obama admires}." Remind the President that he has yet to meet his greatness. I think we should treat President Obama and respect President Obama for being a man on the cusp of greatness. Greatness takes work. And Obama is going to need a lot of support to achieve greatness. That includes support from us. Also, the power of democracy is best demonstrated when leaders deny themselves, and the future officeholders, of gaining too much power. For example, President George Washington was offered kingship of the US colonies and he turned it down to become our first president. Washington was also asked what superlative he should go by, "Your Highness" and so forth. Washington said, "Just call me 'Mr. President.'" It's time to give up warrantless wiretaps on American citizens. What do you think?

1. If we are going to emphasize his peace prize, we should do more to correlate that award with what he is doing/Bush did. In particular, we could make the argument that his prize was at least partially a repudiation of the surveillance policies under the Bush administration, though we would need to be careful about how we craft this aspect in particular.
2. In the first line, I don't really like pointing out that the peace prize "puts him in good company" unless we are going to expand on that. I also think we need a better transition to discussing FISA/Patriot Act---which we could perhaps do to accomodate the "good company" by citing others who have won the award for promoting civil liberties. 3. When discussing Holder, we could cite the "conversation" he admitted was available on civil liberties concerns. 4. We will need an update on what is happening in the HJC hearings, or at least a recognition that those hearings are ongoing. 5. The discussion of Senator Sessions is overtly negative. Of course there is much reason to be extremely critical of him, but it would be fantastic if we could use more "hopeful" rhetoric at least in addition to this. Personally, I would like to add in a play on words of "audacity of hope" or the line the PCCC has been using: "yes we STILL can". 6. I"m not sure if saying we "urge him to live up to the morals of hte campaign" is the best way to describe it. I like citing his campaign a lot, but am not sure that morals is the right word. 7. I'm not sure if we need to say "please do it" as opposed to "please do" in terms of upholding the constitution. 8. Lastly, I don't think we need to say "reject the policies of fear on national security", we could probably just say "reject the policies of fear". ---Harry |

When targeting progressive media outlets, how are we asking them to cover this?
I understand a focus of democrat vs democrat and disillusionment with Obama, but I still feel like we lack a hook for what is so newsworthy. I think Marcy Wheeler's blog posts about Obama hiding under Jeff Sessions' skirts could be considered such a hook, but that might be more negative than we want to go considering we will be coming out with a very polite open letter.

This is the message I sent to Pres. Obama on the White House contact page:Mr. President, Congratulations on your Nobel Peace Prize—it certainly puts you in good company and gives you greater responsibility. I am curious to see how your status as a war president—they are now your wars, no longer Mr. Bush's—and a supporter of continuing the many provisions of the PATRIOT act that I feel have outlived their emergency usefulness, despite the FBI's claims to the contrary (they have a vested interest in making their work easier; my loyalty is to the Constitutional protection from unreasonable search). Naturally, I cannot as a citizen truly evaluate their claims, but if there is indeed a current TERRORISM-RELATED investigation that could be compromised by a nonrenewal of certain provisions, the renewal could be designed in such a way as to "grandfather in" that particular investigation and the provision in question be terminated upon the conclusion of that specific investigation. I was a supporter during your presidential campaign; I am a member of GetFISARight on Organizing for America and elsewhere, and I hope that the confidence in you that is expressed by the Nobel committee proves to be justified. Please, for our world, our nation, and yourself, make it so!
I offer it as the basis of our group letter, if you so choose, or start new! But please, let's get started!

I was unable to make the conference call but just listened to the audio and wanted to address this point. In general I agree, but I am concerned about the possibility of the Bush illegal wiretapping recurring--if not with Obama then with successive administrations.
Legislative action is certainly necessary and my sense is that this group is committed to it; I also agree that legal action is best left to groups like the ACLU and EFF. But I'm not sure that Obama agreeing to relinquish certain presidential powers will result in any lasting change (I think you need legislation or legal precedents for that). I'm also concerned about that the objectivity of the Inspectors Generals and how much we can rely on their work. I think government oversight is best performed by those outside government. These are just a couple of thoughts I had. I don't them to be negative in any way-just my 2-cents worth. Patrick (log in problems)

From an NRA member: The big thing at the moment is the attempt to bar anyone on the terrorist list, which is now 1 million names from owning a gun. Most of the people on the list are people with similar names and the list is wildly inaccurate.
This supports the idea that the Patriot Act needs to be cleaned up and improved and moved to JUSTICE! |

So why GetFISARight and not EFF, ACLU, CDT, PCC, etc.?
As someone said, "We that deal with people on the Hill a lot are constrained in a lot of ways, can't call "********" when it happens." As someone else said, "Impart to them that this is the time to do it, if it's not done now won't be done for a very long time." As somebody (Chip Pitts?) said, GetFISARight follows the related threads between PATRIOT and FISAA and other bad laws. So continuity is important. The name GetFISARight is known. Don't throw away a known brand. Sure, we didn't win last time, but xx,000 people wanted us to, and we're not giving up; we're broadening the fight. -jsq

here's the curent version:
* The situation for PATRIOT Act and FISA reform is much more favorable now than it was in July 2008: some new Senators, a less-hostile administration, revelations and details of the extent of the abuses. The JUSTICE Act is an important first step; while limited, it's reforms are very significant. * The Obama Administration's statement that it would consider amendments as part of the PATRIOT Act re-authorization process is a welcome development [Original source: CDT]. * Get FISA Right's contribution to the broad and diverse coalition supporting our civil rights is to spearhead a social network activism campaign, on Twitter in conjunction with progressives, libertarians, moms, millennials, and hopefully many others ... thoughts?

I'm not sure where to put this on the wiki page, but TPM's Twitter Rooms obstensibly provide all of the Twitter accounts for prominent media members on Twitter.
Would be helpful for larger-scale levels of engagement especially.

In general, I am wondering how we should use this chart to organize members of Get Fisa Right who are also bloggers/journalists/those with loud voices?
In particular, I am thinking about Marcy Wheeler and Mike Stark, as the community at FDL should be a target market for us to coalition with, yet clearly we do not want to step on any toes. Plus, those two are doing some incredibly ground breaking work in the blogosphere! |
