Reinstating the Privacy Board
Mar 24 2010, 10:12 PM EDT
I suggest that the group consider getting behind the coalition effort (led in part by the ACLU) to revive the US Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB). Among the signatories are Pelosi and Reid, as well as many other key members of Congress. I suggest we do this because we need a victory, even if a minor one, even if in affiliation with other organizations or individuals we don't exactly condone, in order to stay together and viable. Here's the letter the Coalition sent to Obama earlier this year:http://www.aclu.org/files/assets/pclob_coalition_letter_number.pdf We can debate alternative courses of action to address various slights until we're blue in the face, but each week that goes by shrinks our numbers. Soon we'll be a few folks hocking each other about this or that social ill, like codgers on a park bench, while events pass them by. Not on our watch! Let's get relevant. I do like the idea of prodding Dodd to take this line of policy up as his legacy project during his last months in office and beyond. Make that our longer range goal -- at least until financial reform is done -- and getting the PCLOB reestablished our short-range goal. That's my suggestion. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I don’t have time to read the letter or fully reply now, but I like this idea.

I join Harry in appreciating Bob's angst but disagreeing with his conclusion. We've worked hard to develop mission and vision statements and although participation in the calls has been spotty (2 calls ago the lines were packed), energy from my point of view has rebounded considerably, at least insofar as OFA participants are concerned. In addition, Pelosi and Reid are not at all signatories to the PCLOB letter - they and all the rest of the Homeland Security House and Senate leadership received cc's, that's all. And most notable to me, the PCLOB letter was not even sent to key HCJ an SJC leaders, nor to the Patriot/FISA people on the House and Senate Intel Committees. My opinion is that, whereas we should certainly support PCLOB staffing, our mission is much broader: we are trying to restore the Constitutional rule-of-law in the United States, and although, being a fossil myself, I'll not likely be 'round to see it, our vision transcends generations. It may not be entirely fulfilled for a few decades, but it is, on the most vital of societal issues, the true post-9/11 civil liberties beacon for our country. Do you find this valuable? |

Okay, plan the mission.

Okay, plan the mission. (I'm obviously not Wetpaint adept. It takes too many steps to reply to the email notices.) Do you find this valuable? |
