The ideas you posted seem like a significant step toward simplifying communications. And I have no experience blogging (I'm just now learning about it generally) but I like the idea of reaching out to libertarian bloggers. I've had positive experiences working with Libertarians on legislative issues in my state. They stick to their principles. Do you find this valuable? |

I like the layout of the getfisaright.net site. It's very accessible and seems pretty end-user friendly. This would be a good general link to post or send to friends so they could learn more about the group and the issues. My only suggestion for the page might be to make the RSS feed more prominent. (?)

Joan here. Signin still appears beyond me. What you did, Jon, is fantastic. I'd add something that leads in that allows people to situate themselves. THere are different types of net users. Can we brainstorm categories? 1. Email user, used to having items pushed to me. Comfortable with following email strings. Then: You want to make sure that you are notified of any changes from any of the communication resources. I would take this further but I am finding it difficult to click back to the substance of what was written so I can read and continue to write. Therefore, more to come. Do you find this valuable? |

First of all the best way to click back is to go to the "Location: 2009 Communication channels" at the top and right-click on the link to bring it up in a new window (or tab if you prefer). The first place I'd start while brainstorming users is how they want to participate: receiving updates, being in discussions, and/or collaborating more deeply. Then I'd look at what channel they prefer: email, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, discussion boards. (For a lot of people it may be different answers for different categories.) Going down that approach, though, leads to the situation we have today: a lot of different communication channels. Or you wind up choosing some channels at the expense of others -- but that invariably has implications in terms of power dynamics, and almost always favors older people and guys at the expense of everybody else. I also agree that the communications channels proposal is top notch. I'm in the midst of final exams, but I have been preparing to implement other communications avenues in addition for GFR. This will include at least:1. IAmProgress.org: This is the Center for American Progress's social networking service. The service is organized predominantly by Alan Rosenblatt who has consistently cited GFR as a model for how the Obama administration and CAP should view social network activism. 2. WYOU: the community access TV station (where I now sit on the board of directors). We can ensure that GFR videos are also aired on broadcast TV to the Madison activist community as well as produce other original videos that would be of use to the GFR community. 3. Kokesh.blogspot.com: Adam Kokesh is an IVAW member and Ron Paul supporter. He would be quite the tie into the libertarian community, and he is perhaps the most famous IVAW/Ron Paul supporter. This is due to his stint on MSNBC during John McCain's RNC speech (due to a fellow Ron Paul fan's credentials) with a sign that read "John McCain Votes Against Vets". "First of all the best way to click back is to go to the "Location: 2009 Communication channels" at the top and right-click on the link to bring it up in a new window (or tab if you prefer). The multiple sources of participation, for now at least, is inevitable. As I suggested in my previous post I think we will need more sources and not less. There is no easy answer for coordinating as many people in such a decentralized way as GFR did this summer or as we'd like to accomplish once again, and we need to utilize as many mediums as we possibly can. The internet and new media technologies are very rapidly developing, and no one knows what direction the civil service aspects especially will end up going. Just this week we may have seen the death knell for major newspapers...who knows what will happen next week? The strength of GFR is the desire to take advantage of any of these communication services possible---even underutilized ones like the original MyBO list in the first place. As far as the issue of power dynamics goes, there will assuredly be huge room for leadership opportunities at all levels of this project. What we desperately need is for people to take it on themselves to lead these avenues of communication as well as create new ones to reach the critical mass of untapped potential activists residing in this country. Ideally we'd have all of our communication being cited on all of the mediums at the same time, and this is the sort of goal that even if it grows to making mainstream media each and every time it will still not be enough. This effort for a totally different scale of citizen participation is one the Obama administration itself is grappling with---and one if we play our cards right we perhaps could influence ourselves with the model we present in fact. Where's the press? I mean, not the neo-press, the real press? They may be dullards but they're not the enemy and still the way that most people get their news, especially teenagers and 20somethings, and then again people over 40.

"Good point -- and good points all. I was so focused on internal communications that i totally overlooked press, globs, radio etc. in this writeup. in terms of the press, one thing to do is get more systematic about our communications. an easy thing to do would be to assemble a list of the people who ahve written about us so far and make sure we get back in touch with them. another thing i've been thinking about to kick this off is trying to do a media conference call along with the media release as part of our ad launch. if we can find a pr agency to help get our media releases out that would be great too. other suggestions? 9. I started up a blog ...
Jan 2 2009, 10:01 PM EST
After getting some additional feedback, I decided to use Wordpress rather than Drupal for the blog. It's currently at http://getfisaright.wordpress.com/ -- we'll eventually put it somewhere like getfisaright.net/blog or something. Also, I updated the links on the web page at getfisaright.net to point to the new blog and the discussion forums on the wiki.
