This is the message I sent to Pres. Obama on the White House contact page:Mr. President, Congratulations on your Nobel Peace Prize—it certainly puts you in good company and gives you greater responsibility. I am curious to see how your status as a war president—they are now your wars, no longer Mr. Bush's—and a supporter of continuing the many provisions of the PATRIOT act that I feel have outlived their emergency usefulness, despite the FBI's claims to the contrary (they have a vested interest in making their work easier; my loyalty is to the Constitutional protection from unreasonable search). Naturally, I cannot as a citizen truly evaluate their claims, but if there is indeed a current TERRORISM-RELATED investigation that could be compromised by a nonrenewal of certain provisions, the renewal could be designed in such a way as to "grandfather in" that particular investigation and the provision in question be terminated upon the conclusion of that specific investigation. I was a supporter during your presidential campaign; I am a member of GetFISARight on Organizing for America and elsewhere, and I hope that the confidence in you that is expressed by the Nobel committee proves to be justified. Please, for our world, our nation, and yourself, make it so! I offer it as the basis of our group letter, if you so choose, or start new! But please, let's get started!

The most remarkable thing about this paid survey program is that anyone can make money with it. It doesn't require any special skills, training, education or previous business experience. You only need access to the Internet and basic typing skills. It is the perfect home business for stay at home moms, students, home makers, retirees or anyone that is in need of some extra cash.

The site makes the opening statement: "We are a proud group of Obama supporters who believe in his call for hope and a new kind of politics." I have a number of problems with this statement. What specifically, is 'his call'? Forget the messianic feeling wording like 'his call' evokes. Is it a call to prayer, worship, war? I voted for the man, so I supported what I thought his words meant, but he must put accomplishment behind the words, and earn my support on a daily basis. I absolutely do not support any political or government leader as an individual personality. I support his presidency, so long as his presidency serves the interest of the common good of the people. Blind support for and faith in an individual can turn a leader with good potential into a tyrant.
'A new kind of politics'? Again, I do not know what this means, but it sounds so good. Everybody takes away their own personal image from the statement, yet, few agree what the image is. Have we not learned anything about political speech in the last thousand years? With this internet and mass media of ours, can we not do a respectable job of nulling this high-sounding, but 'meaning anything to anybody' language?
If the 'incremental and temporary improvements' of the pending FISA legislation are to be more than a fleeting appeasement, something that can be taken back by a dysfunctional Congress, or ignored, then we had better understand the interrelationship between some small words which provide cover for very hideous relationships and activities. Some of the small words are partisanship, special interests, corporatism, oligarchy, monopoly, etc, etc. Dysfunctional? How about 'counterproductive'? Let it sink in, it's not a trivial condition, counterproductivity of the Congress, given their theoretical role in the Democracy.

What is ACTA? An international intellectual property trade agreement, being negotiated in secret by U.S., EU, Japan, et al. Leaked proposed wording indicates it may require ISPs not only to tell law enforcement who is doing what but to disconnect customers for *suspicion* of intellectual property violations:
http://www.eff.org/issues/acta
Who's against it? Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown, for two, and notice their Cc: to Joe Biden:

July 9: Obama voted for FISAA. August 23: Obama announced Joe Biden as his VP.
http://bit.ly/4yvVat
'In the 1990s, Biden was chairman of the Judiciary Committee and introduced a bill called the Comprehensive Counter-Terrorism Act, which the EFF says he was "persuaded" to do by the FBI. A second Biden bill was called the Violent Crime Control Act. Both were staunchly anti-encryption, with this identical language:
"It is the sense of Congress that providers of electronic communications services and manufacturers of electronic communications service equipment shall ensure that communications systems permit the government to obtain the plain text contents of voice, data, and other communications when appropriately authorised by law."
That was the proposed legislation that caused Phil Zimmermann to invent PGP, free public key encryption.
Zimmermann in August of last year said he never specifically named Biden and Biden has probably changed his tune by now:
http://bit.ly/8epAXb
Has anybody asked Joe Biden what his current opinion is on wiretapping and privacy issues in general?
Biden voted against FISAA, as did Hillary, Chris Dodd, Reid, Schumer, Kerry, etc.
http://bit.ly/4s75zo
Maybe Biden has changed his tune. Maybe he could help persuade Obama to do the same.
Maybe Hillary could help. She's Sec. of State now, after all.
Instead of lobbying only Obama, why not also lobby people who can lobby him?
Just a thought.

Okay, we have a new kind of account at Change.Org, and I have the bare bones presence set up for it. Under its auspices, we've posted a petition using their new petition tool. Here are the things we still need to do:
1. Publicize the petition * The URL is: http://www.change.org/get_fisa_right/actions/view/get_fisa_rights_open_letter_to_president_obama 2. Post a blog on Change.org point to the petition and everything else 3. Those of us who have change.org accounts should join the new non-profit * The URL is: http://www.change.org/get_fisa_right 4. Someone (me at least) needs to buff up our about/mission/history statements * For this you need an account at bloggers.change.org, I believe
For those who are confused about our new account and our existing presence on Change.org, here's what Robin at Change.org wrote to me:
"creating a nonprofit profile on the site is different from having an Ideas for Change presence. Ideas for change is an annual event and soon we will be launching a new version of the site where people will submit all new ideas. A nonprofit profile is for an organization to use that is going to regularly run campaigns on the site so they can all be housed somewhere."
Hope his explanation helps.

"But after closed-door hearings by three Congressional panels, some lawmakers are asking what the tolerable limits are for such incidental collection and whether the privacy of Americans is being adequately protected.
“For the Hill, the issue is a sense of scale, about how much domestic e-mail collection is acceptable,” a former intelligence official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because N.S.A. operations are classified. “It’s a question of how many mistakes they can allow.”

I remember hearing you talk about bringing the troops home and also of doing something about the job lossess to our people, now both are very important especially the jobs. Instead of removing jobs over seas, etc., it is time to put our people back to work, there is nothing better than a well paid job for everybody that will put good will out there. All people need to be self supporting and definitely includes the down and outers, the people who are suffering from lack of jobs and still trying very hard to support their families. It is time to end this mirage of war which only benefits the well to do and that eventually will come to an end when we nialate all countries. It is time to take care of our own country, first. The American people when you were running really thought that this was the change you were talking about and I would love to believe that it truly was. Bringing jobs to every community in the USA is definitely a priority and of course bringing our troops home is up there. We need to gather ourselves together and take back our Constitution as it was written for our country. It is the greatest way to go, it helps every person in the USA to know their President wants their constitutional rights restored in total. I am pretty old and have watched this country since the thirties, watched and wondered why. I ask you to not be for war anymore, we don't need it, we all need truth and honest all the way, thankyou very much - I know you understand.

I've missed or missed out on the conference calls so if this been there, done that please ignore. These are the questions I would ask myself: Who can we working with on the committee staff? What is the Chairman's position? If he's anti-, do we have a member who can be our champion? Who do we know at JoD? Do we know who is staffing this at DoJ? Do we know who the WH's point person is for this? Is it Legislative Affairs? NSC? CoS? Do we have the names of the reporters working this story? Are there advocacy groups who's collective brain we can pick? Is there anyone group/org/PAC that has the exact same goal? If they are better funded can we leverage our effort by offering our help in addition to doing what we are doing? That's off the top so If all these are obvious, then chalk it up to great minds thinking alike. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think any progress is going to come from the WH until they get HCR through. But hitting those congressmen on the committee with phone calls to their office is still the best way to ring their bell. Maybe you've already contacted the hometown papers editorial board in their districts to see how many we can get to write an editorial. "It will take an act of patriotism to fix the problems with the Patriot Act" Good Luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. @mgill006

I agree that the NPP paragraph should be scrapped. However, if it is decided that we should reference the NPP, the intro should be short and to the point. Perhaps something like...
"Congratulations on winning the highly esteemed NPP; we proudly believe that you are a man on the cusp of greatness."
Also, imho, the second paragraph should be scrapped and it's points should be inserted into other sentences as needed.
Perhaps the first paragraph in this open letter should be like the third paragraph in the current draft... try something direct to the purpose of this letter... without a long rambling preamble... perhaps...
"Patriot Act and FISA reform are once again before Congress; now is the perfect time to follow through on your commitment to preserve American civil liberties and to curb executive branch abuses against the US Constitution."
Once the first sentence is settled, it will set the pace and tone of the remaining letter.

Totally agree - get right to the subject at hand and then fill in the individual messages - and get rid of the word "betray"; replace with "disappoint".

In actuality I feel just that way, betrayed. But to put it in a letter seems nasty - remember General Betrayus? That's a mighty strong word - suggest changing it to "disappoint us".

Lose the Nobel Peace Prize line, it adds nothing to the discussion, and it takes up valuable space. The second paragraph that references the response to the first open letter is a much stronger beginning.
Lose the word "horrific" - we don't want to come across as melodramatic.
The part about having a hard time seeing behind the scenes work... please. Of course you have a hard time seeing behind the scenes work. That sentence just made me laugh out loud.
We urge you to live up to the "morals" of this campaign? Please. We're not talking to the Bush administration here. He made campaign pledges, not "morals."
Overall, this letter just needs to be tightened up. Really tightened up.
