home page mockup for convention adThis is a featured page

WORK IN PROGRESS! This is for design of our home page might look on Wednesday, September 3, when we have six ad placements runs at the convention in St. Paul and we potentially get some coverage as well. With luck, we'll get some new visitors. Some will already know about FISA and why it matters; we want them to join us -- on myBO, Facebook, MySpace, the email list here, the discussion group, whatever's easiest for them. Many don't know about FISA or aren't convinced that it matters; we want to educate them, and hopefully persuade them as well. And some will be members, allies, and media; if they're interested, we want them to understand and give feedback on our strategy and timeframe. Hmm, well, that's a lot to convey in a single page, but it's worth a try.

Please see the discussion threads at the bottom for individual topics.

Change doesn't come from Washington. It comes to Washington.

During the past 8 years, the Bush administration listened to Americans' phone calls and read their emails without a warrant. On July 9, 2008, the Senate passed a bill to amend FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, to further expand the government's warrantless wiretapping powers. The Senate also mocked the rule of law and gave telecom companies immunity for any illegal actions they may have taken without having to appear in court.

All 47 of the Republicans, and a total of 69 Senators, voted for the bill.

We lost that round. But it's not over: as soon as President Bush signed the FISA Amendement Act into law, the ACLU filed suit. The case is likely to continue in next year.

If legislation to reform FISA is introduced early next Congress, it's not too late to roll back government's surveillance powers -- and to hold telecom companies accountable. We and our allies like Strange Bedfellows and the People's Campaign for the Constitution are getting steadily stronger; we think we can win the FISA battle in 2009. And a win on FISA will turn the tide, so that we can take aim at the PATRIOT Act and all the other abuses of the last 8 years and restore our Constitution.

We're building a new kind of movement, one that's beyond traditional politics.

Please join us.

There are a couple of tacks to take to go into more detail:

1) we're using social networks to bring people together directly (not via a campaign or an organization) and help our voice be heard. proof point: Obama's response

2) we're willing to criticize the candidate we support (Obama) while still highlighting that he's better than his main opponent (McCain) on the issue

thoughts about either of these, or other ways in which we're a new movement?

1. tell candidates that you care about the issue
2. help get the word out that it's not over
3. join us -- and invite your friends
