Using the email listThis is a featured page

It's easy to get overwhelmed by email on this list. Here are a couple ways to unsubscribe from the deluge of mail. Please, please, don't reply-all to the list and ask us to unsubscribe you.

QUICK LINK - IF YOU'RE ALREADY LOGGED IN TO MYBO:
and choose the e-mail setting you prefer. (Daily digest sends one e-mail per day. Or you can choose no e-mails or all e-mails.)
Changing this setting will keep you enrolled in this important effort, but will help you control incoming mail.
THE LONG WAY (THAT ISN'T TERRIBLY LONG):
  1. Go to http://www.barackobama.com/index.php
  2. Click the Log in to MyBo link on the right
  3. When you reach your MyBo Dashboard page, look for the list of groups you've joined.
  4. Click the name of this group (SenatorObama-PleaseVoteAgainstFisa...) in your group list.
  5. In the group home page, look for LISTSERV section that has e-mail options.
  6. Choose the e-mail option you want (daily digest gets you one e-mail per day, or you can choose "no e-mail").
  7. Click Change My Subscription.

You can also choose to leave the group from this page. We ask that you consider remaining enrolled, since in the game of politics numbers are power.

If you are using the email list, a few things to keep in mind, basically revolving around being considerate to others on the list:

  • When replying to a message, please delete all preceding text except the comment to which you are replying. Including an entire thread with every message bloats messages and clogs up bandwidth. Don't.
  • If you've got a question, try checking the wiki first; there are pages about what else you can do, contact information, resources, and more much more.
  • Consider a "reply" (to the sender) instead of a "reply-all" to the group. This is especially a good idea when you just want to say "thanks" -- or if you want to debate a specific issue.
  • Pay attention to subjects, and change them when it makes sense.
  • Remember that this is a group focused on FISA. There are other important issues as well -- and plenty of other groups and email list to discuss them, so please stay on-topic here!
  • Please remember to temporarily unsubscribe from the list when you turn on your vacation auto-responders. If you neglect to do this, we all get a message from your auto-responder. It's great that you're on vacation, but no need to let all of us know.
  • Can those of you who use Spam filters like Inbox.com please change your settings so that all of us list members don't get spammed in turn by your spam filter? Just add "SenatorObama-PleaseVoteAgainstFISA@groups.barackobama.com" to your safe senders list. Otherwise, every single one of us (now up to over 400) gets an e-mail message from your spam filter.
  • Please post letters to Senator Obama and other statements about why you think this is an important issuein the group's community blog. Accumulating all the posts in one place makes a far more powerful statement -- and highlights the strength and articulateness of the opposition to FISA. And, with people joining the group so rapidly, this helps cuts down on the amount of mail we all get in our inboxes.
    ...

Other suggestions? Please add them!

Civil discourse

For us to work together effectively, we need to talk to each other civilly. There are people in this group with many different views and backgrounds; we need to work together if we are going to have any chance of success. So please keep the following simple guidelines in mind:

  • Respect other members and their political beliefs. Disagree respectfully; don't attack them.
  • Remember that langauge is ambiguous and that there are ample opportunities for misunderstanding -- by yourself and others. Don't assume bad intent or that the other person is an idiot when it might just be a miscommunication.
  • Stay on topic. The group is for focused on telecom immunity and FISA; please do not use it to advocate for other candidates, discuss other issues related to what may or may not be a move to the center by Obama. Because of the high volume, please avoid "chatty" messages; we'll get a message board up for those at some point.
  • Respect groups of people different than you. Avoid statements that are explicitly or implicitly disrespectful in terms of gender, race, class, age, orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, computer literacy, competence in English or any other language, or so on.
  • If somebody else violates the ground rules, that does not give you the right to do so as well.
