Monday, July 21:

Attend an Obama Listening to America Platform Meeting

Help ensure that FISA is revisited when our new president and new congressional delegation take office in 2009: Get FISA reforms on the Democratic Party platform. Senator Obama has asked that we take an active role in shaping the platform via platform meetings held throughout the country:

  1. Find an upcoming Listening Platform event near you, and RSVP.
  2. Print either the FISA flyer or the Constitution flyer (whichever one you feel more comfortable using).
  3. Hand out flyers to other attendees, and request the 3-bullet position statement (front of the flyer) be added to the platform.

Note: We made the flyer a two-sided half sheet to save some trees. Print copies of the first page, then put those pages back into the printer drawer, and print the second page onto the back side.

Hold the Senate Accountable for Their FISA Votes

Please take a moment to send a message to your senator holding them accountable for their vote on the FISA bill yesterday. Either thank them for voting against it, or hold them accountable for voting for it. With just your zip code and a couple of clicks, you can send either a pre-filled message or customize it to send your own message.

Open Letter to Barack Obama: Demand Accountability

Wednesday, the Senate passed the so-called "compromise" FISA bill and gave retroactive immunity to the telecommunications companies that illegally gave the Bush administration private data without warrants. Obama voted for this bill. Please sign our open letter to Barack Obama demanding accountability, and invite your friends to do the same.

a good time to start thinking about it ... once again, Senate staffers will not be working (not sure about people on the campaign), so it's not a great phoning day. traffic in general is likely to be slow, people (including me) are spending time with friends and family and at the beach, not online. how do we put the time to good use?

Mr. Dennis Strigl, President & CEO
Verizon

Dear Mr. Strigl,

I have been a Verizon customer for several years, using a cell phone and wireless card for business. I have paid thousands of dollars in service fees.
At this time, I wish to end my service through Verizon at the end of the current billing cycle, AND, I expect NOT to be charged an early termination fee based on the following information:
1. I have honored the requirements of our agreement by paying for services; you have broken our agreement by not protecting customer privacy as outlined in our agreement.
2. Verizon Says It Turned Over Data Without Court Orders
Firm's Letter to Lawmakers Details Government Requests

Verizon Communications, the nation's second-largest telecom company, told congressional investigators that it has provided customers' telephone records to federal authorities in emergency cases without court orders hundreds of times since 2005.
AT&T and Verizon both argued that the onus should not be on the companies to determine whether the government has lawfully requested customer records.
I feel violated, just as though someone had entered my home and gone through my personal papers and belongings.
3. WASHINGTON, May 12 — The telecommunications company Qwest turned down requests by the National Security Agency for private telephone records because it concluded that doing so would violate federal privacy laws, a lawyer for the telephone company's former chief executive said today.

Mr. Strigl, Verizon has armies of attorneys who know that it is not legal to turn over customer records without a court order or warrant. It really is that simple.
