Ten Congressional Candidates Position Statement on Civil RemediesThis is a featured page

Ten congressional candidates have authored a position paper that includes a statement setting a clear standard in opposition to the current FISA/immunity abomination (and the accompanying rationalizations). The paper is titled, A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq.

The ten candidates are:

The section of the paper titled, "Restore Transparency and Accountability" includes this position statement:
[P]rovide standing for civil actions for declaratory and injunctive relief to persons who refrain from electronic communications through fear of being subject to warrantless electronic surveillance for foreign intelligence purposes. [Emphasis added.]

These candidates are specifically advocating the right to use civil actions as a legal remedy for the threat of illegal surveillance... in other words, the EXACT OPPOSITE of the position of the current FISA/immunity bill! Having such a clear position in writing makes me feel better, given the recent stampede of Democrats willing to support (or even advocating for) telecom immunity!

The Plan includes a lot of other great stuff, and fits very well with Obama's statement that we want to end the war, and end the mindset that got us into war. It's been endorsed by quite a few candidates (54 House candidates, and 4 Senate candidates), although some of these failed to win the nomination.
So far there are no sitting members of Congress. Check out the website - there hasn't been much activity on the Plan of late that I can see, but moving forward it would be great to channel the energy of this group into getting more endorsees to the Plan.
