This is the message I sent to Pres. Obama on the White House contact page:Mr. President, Congratulations on your Nobel Peace Prize—it certainly puts you in good company and gives you greater responsibility. I am curious to see how your status as a war president—they are now your wars, no longer Mr. Bush's—and a supporter of continuing the many provisions of the PATRIOT act that I feel have outlived their emergency usefulness, despite the FBI's claims to the contrary (they have a vested interest in making their work easier; my loyalty is to the Constitutional protection from unreasonable search). Naturally, I cannot as a citizen truly evaluate their claims, but if there is indeed a current TERRORISM-RELATED investigation that could be compromised by a nonrenewal of certain provisions, the renewal could be designed in such a way as to "grandfather in" that particular investigation and the provision in question be terminated upon the conclusion of that specific investigation. I was a supporter during your presidential campaign; I am a member of GetFISARight on Organizing for America and elsewhere, and I hope that the confidence in you that is expressed by the Nobel committee proves to be justified. Please, for our world, our nation, and yourself, make it so!
I offer it as the basis of our group letter, if you so choose, or start new! But please, let's get started!

I was unable to make the conference call but just listened to the audio and wanted to address this point. In general I agree, but I am concerned about the possibility of the Bush illegal wiretapping recurring--if not with Obama then with successive administrations.
Legislative action is certainly necessary and my sense is that this group is committed to it; I also agree that legal action is best left to groups like the ACLU and EFF. But I'm not sure that Obama agreeing to relinquish certain presidential powers will result in any lasting change (I think you need legislation or legal precedents for that). I'm also concerned about that the objectivity of the Inspectors Generals and how much we can rely on their work. I think government oversight is best performed by those outside government. These are just a couple of thoughts I had. I don't them to be negative in any way-just my 2-cents worth. Patrick (log in problems)

We've been discussing in various calls and threads all the ways our privacy is being invaded. I started making a list of various words which come up. They have overlapping and different definitions and one of the things that keeps happening is that folks switch words on us, on others, in order to obfuscate the core issue.
It might make sense to gather the words associated with what we're interested in and develop definitions and show how they relate to the 4th Amendment. Words I have thus far are: wiretap eavesdrop record sweep surveillance

i'm not suggesting we drop Obama completely, but the sort of call numbers we can generate DO sway members of the legislative side.
Getting FISA itself fixed is good, we ccan also be looking at the places gthe surveillance laws needed new privacy protections. I have location tracking in particular in mind.

Any way we can work w/ local community organizers on something resembling a "sticky" public education campaign? Needs:
1. Identify local leaders in cities and states and/or regions 2. Equip and educate (EFF, ACLU can help) 3. Communicate and empower.
