Some highlights about the early release of the YouTube video of the Don't let our Constitution die ad.

  • propagation over the weekend was from our email lists, the message board, and Nancy Scola's techPresident post; this was at least 600 views
  • the link from Jack and Jill Politics on Sunday probably led to 100-150 views
  • the Wired story probably led to 200-300 views (and of course led to being on Slashdot). Why not more? The first link in the story was to our site, not the video, and our site doesn't link to or embed the video. Also, the biggest visual on the Wired page (the image of the tombstone) wasn't a link either to our site or to the video.
  • our Facebook blast mail probably contributed 100-200 views, which would be a 5-10% hit rate. our mail didn't contain any propagation suggestion, and so there doesn't appear to have been any significant additional propagation on Facebook.
  • the Slashdot link led to 700+ views. Why not more? There were 289 comments on the thread, which is decent activity, but the only link in their story went to the Wired page rather than the video or our site. our site got 1500 new visitors the day of the Slashdot link, but total video views that day only increased by 1150 (and bear in mind that some of the site visitors may have come from the video, which ended with our URL).
  • our overall statistics show that size of our Facebook and my.barackobama.com groups remained flat, and there was no change in trend on the message boards and Google discussion group, so we did not convert any measurable number of these new visitors to members. if we want to start growing again, we'll need to highlight these as well as the other calls to action on the web site's main page -- and on the ad's page on our site as well.
  • total views, counting the updated video (released post-Slashdot, alas) hit 3,000 in the first week after release -- an excellent start towards our goal of 10,000-20,000 by September 2.
  • as of Monday morning July 18, we had 12 paid placements; this rose to 28 by Monday July 25. This means that we had 16 paid placements from the roughly 4000 people who viewed the ad on YouTube or visited our site during this time - 0.4%, which is surprisingly good for a first attempt -- and, once again, highlights the opportunities for improvement.

Detailed numbers

Caveat: YouTube batches statistics, often waiting several hours to update them, so there's some imprecision here.
