Summary
- Key decisions for the Inauguration ad
- we'll work on two videos, a lighter "congratulations, President Obama, now get FISA right" one (airing primarily in DC) and a harder-hitting one aiming at changing minds
- **Additional notes via edit:
- Why limit to DC? Lets target all markets as millions will be viewing
- bottom-line goal for ads: awareness and getting others to join us as part of a large group of people working to hold Obama accountable to restore our civil liberties
- Get FISA Right's focus is on the future, not the past
- Next steps
- Brainstorming the two videos on the wiki -- Jon to get up notes, everybody to join in
- Next conference call this Saturday December 13 (2 PM Pacifc/5 PM Eastern), invite coming soon
- Finalizing video scripts on Monday December 15
- Please promote our entry in the Ideas for Change competition ... and vote for all the other ones related to the wiretapping and the PATRIOT Act, too!
- If you're going to a Change is Coming house parties this weekend, please bring up FISA and civil liberties -- and consider printing out and bringing flyers! The flyers we used last summer seem like they'll still work; check out the FISA flyer or the Constitution flyer (whichever one you feel more comfortable using).

Notes
Frank: let other groups worry about the past, let's focus on the future: asking Obama to relinquish the "imperial presidency" powers
Jon: 3 purposes for ad: reach viewers directly on cable TV, get press, and YouTube/blog awareness
Brendan: SaysMe's introducing "pooling" which lets people contribute whatever they want to air the ad, with no minimum.
Jon: this is huge; the $100 minimum was a big pain before
Brendan: the most successful SaysMe ad so far
Women against McCain Palin ... very hard-hitting, stuff campaigns wouldn't air. Some people might not be comfortable with this, so also want a lighter ad, focused on congratulating Obama and reminding him we're holding him accountable. Proposed solution: do two! Possible idea for harder-hitting ad: a conversation on the phone being wiretapped and the government misunderstanding.
Evalyn: likes future focus, two ads
Frank: I like the "misunderstanding" part. We need to figure out how to reach the people who say "what's the big deal, I don't have anything to hide". not sure how ...
Jon: Bob's idea (in
this thread): tie to Obama's own experience "In the office, bumbling Verizon employees, like creatures in a Harry Potter movie, are prying through the files, showing each other O's calling records, making snide comments about "O's ohs!", etc."
Joan: what about the New Jersey Fort Dix terrorism trial? If they're found innocent that could be a good example. [
link here] Joan adds: the interesting fact right now is that they are maintaining that their words and actions were misinterpreted, and how easy it is to turn 'ordinary' stuff into terrorist material. THis contrasts with the rigorous process ordinarily to be followed for gaining access to someone's conversations, see what Patrick Fitzgerald in Chicago described as his process for wiretapping. Lots of review and oversight.
Joan: my son said he didn't care if the government listened in to his calls ... "how about your parents?" i asked. he cared a lot about that!
Jon: good thing to keep in mind, we need to get youth more involved and haven't reached them effectively yet
Mary: the only privacy thing that's gotten them excited is Beacon on Facebook. (
more on Beacon here; Ari Melber's
About Facebook has some excellent context)
Joseph, Perry: like the discussion so far
Frank: I saw Feingold on Bill Moyers Journal saying he's going to hold Obama accountable. How to reach out to him?
- comment from Jon: we know some people who may be able to introduce us. Hold that thought!
General: can we get to people like Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, Penn Jillette, Stephen Colbert (with a constitutional focus), Rachel Maddow? Let's start working on this now ...
Joseph: What about a newspaper ad for the day after inauguration? It'll be a collectors item.
Jon: Maybe work with Strange Bedfellows?
Discussion thread here.Brendan: if we've done the ads well, we'll have articles about us in the papers too ...
Ad brainstorming
Note from Jon: I'll edit this and put it onto the main ad page
"Light" ad: flow from "don't let our constitution die"
At the top of change.gov's org chart is the Constitution. Zoom in on that? Use quotes from the site (e.g. with privacy and civil liberties board)
I couldn't find the above reference...can we get a url?
Another purpose of the ad: getting the 23,000 people in our MyBo group to reengage
Should we ask for impeachment? Clashes with the "future not past"
