Narrative in progressThis is a featured page

One of the action items from the October 20 phone call was to come up with a story to pitch to folks like Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Bill Moyers to get them to cover Patriot Act reauthorization and FISA. We had some good ideas on the call, and I took the action item of putting a rough start on the wiki. Hopefully others can contribute as well! -- Jon

  • There's a battle within the Democratic party between the heroes who are making good on the promises made to reign in the Imperial Presidency ... and those who are trying to prolong the status quo. We're on the side of the heroes :-)
  • At the same time there's disillusionment from many Obama supporters: the Administration's behavior on Patriot Act and FISA reform is not change we can believe in.
  • ....
Jon discussed on the blog the ask or hook for this narrative involving our "open letter, set in the context of a broader social network campaign" This would put a premium on crafting our open letter before we attempt to engage these media members, but it would certainly add a lot of salience to the items from above.

When targeting progressive media outlets, how are we asking them to cover this?

I understand a focus of democrat vs democrat and disillusionment with Obama, but I still feel like we lack a hook for what is so newsworthy. I think Marcy Wheeler's blog posts about Obama hiding under Jeff Sessions' skirts could be considered such a hook, but that might be more negative than we want to go considering we will be coming out with a very polite open letter.
