Multiple mailing listsThis is a featured page

Current status: this is a POTENTIAL structure for the future currently under discussion. If you're blogging or writing an article about this, please make that clear -- and please be kind enough to include a link back to this page so that people can see the current version and to the group on myBO. Thanks!

The group's listserv has literally hundreds of messages a day. While it's remarkably effective for a group that size -- the vast majority of the posts are well-thought-out and valuable, and there's minimal flaming and trolling -- this is causing a lot of problems: the digests are too big to bereadable, we're hitting bugs in the software, and so on.

Usually the best approach to this is to set up multiple mailing lists. These might be different groups on myBO, or we might try to host them elsewhere to get some better functionality (for example, a welcome message to new membes, and a web-based archive). How about something like this:

  • get-fisa-right-announce: low bandwidth mail from group administrators: status updates, urgent announcements.
  • get-fisa-right-action: focusing on the action plan: planning, alerts, updates
  • get-fisa-right-discussions: more general discussions about FISA and the campaign
  • get-fisa-right-letters: copies of email letters to Senator Obama and other Senators. [we'll find a way to get all the letters from the digest so far into this at some point]. this has been the bulk of the traffic in the current myBO group and I think it's a great thing; we just need to keep it out of the way from other discussions.

Most people will probably only want to be on get-fisa-right-announce and maybe get-fisa-right-action, so it should really decrease the load a lot ...

Thoughts?
