Dear "Get FISA Right" supporters,

There's a great opportunity for us right now to help tip the balance in a close Senate race -- for someone who would be a vast improvement on the issue of FISA specifically and the rule of law generally.

Jim Martin is in a very tight race with U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss in Georgia. Recent polls suggest the Democrat may pull off one of the biggest upsets of the 2008 elections -- against the man who smeared Max Cleland for not supporting every provision of the PATRIOT Act.

We're writing to ask you to give to Jim Martin's campaign now.

That's because when Matt Stoller recently interviewed Jim Martin for the blog "OpenLeft" -- the Georgia progressive said this when it came to FISA:

Question: Do you have a position on FISA and government wiretapping?

Jim Martin: The threat of terrorism is real and the government should take all necessary measures to protect us. While I support the overall aims of the recent FISA bill, the inclusion of a provision granting amnesty to telecom providers who permitted the government to listen in on the conversations of Americans without a warrant troubles me. Because I do not believe that the government should craft policy that permits law breaking, I would not have supported the FISA bill that included telecom immunity.

These and other answers by Martin convinced Matt and the OpenLeft community to add Martin to their "Better Democrats" fundraising page.

Now we're writing to ask you to help out, too: click on this "Better Democrats" ActBlue link and give now -- $100, $200, $35, whatever you can -- to help give Martin the funds he needs to win this race on November 4th. You'll see other candidates listed there as well -- especially Jeff Merkley of Oregon, who even called out Obama for his FISA vote, and Darcy Burner, Eric Massa, Tom Perriello, Sam Bennett, and Donna Edwards, whose "Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq" also proposes giving standing to citizens to file civil actions when they refrain from electronic communication for fear of surveillance. Many of these candidates are in tight election races as well.

While we look forward to an Obama presidency -- of course! -- we also need more and better Democrats like Martin, Merkley, and others in Congress to "Get FISA Right." All of the "Better Democrat" candidates are worthy of your support; you can either divide your contribution equally among them or focus your contribution on one or two like Jim Martin. So click this link now and give what you can.

We'll be in touch again before the election to update you on this campaign, and on other opportunities to help "Get FISA Right" by getting the right Congress to do it.

Thanks in advance for your support!
