Here is the meeting page:http://preview.qworky.net/meetings/40
Harry:
Feel free to let us know your thoughts on the agenda and goals, and to generally use this chat room for pre-meeting preparation!
guest3209:
Ben Masel here, login's not working.
Brons:
Ben. I had troubles once that appeared to result from the login name being case sensitive. I don't *know* that that was the problem, but it was my impression. Any chance that's what's happening?
Mark Dorlester:
Hello, all
Harry:
Harry's here, hope everyone is well!
Harry:
Mark: extended Patriot Act a year. Measure that passed with extension is medicare physican payment reform act
Harry:
Mark: Reid realized it wasn't good to send bill back to the house. Put in another amendment to change the title of the bill.
Harry:
Need to fortify foundation to make sure this won't happen again last year
Harry:
Mark: Senate staffer whose source was Fox News said they don't plan on taking this up until after election due to controversy
Harry:
Mark: plan we should plan for is to be ready immediately after the election. May come back in session in Nov. and/or Dec.
Harry:
Who is this wait appeasing?
Harry:
Mark: electorate is so profoundly stupid, when a congressmen speaks they believe it, the deal on the hill is that you cannot discuss this meaningfully in front of hte public. Public, left or right, will go nuts.
Harry:
Mark: dealt with in first session. 90% of all draconian laws passed have been passed then, as by election time (a year after first session) public will have long forgotten.
Harry:
Mark: 2nd session is for pandering. Whatever is happening in reality, will convince constituency that everything is wonderful. Successful, since 90% get reelected.
Harry:
Mark: schizophrenic. Public hates congress, but not thier congressperson.
Harry:
What organization structures do we need to make sure GFR is sustainable and growing?
Harry:
Mark: Sally and I worked on mission statement. I'd be ready to publicize that, as it's been generalized beyond Patriot/FISA. No longer mentioned in the mission statement.
Harry:
Jim: i've been short on time, but my reaction is the reverse of yours, means we should have the weekly meetings. One thing that has helped keep me connected.
Harry:
Jim: talks about having something that would happen in April timeframe and 9/11 timeframe to help publicize and activate. Target of pickign things up in Nov. after election, does give us milestones that are not bad.
Harry:
Question of sustainability. Setting up meetings takes a long time. Could use help.
Harry:
Mark: I'd be willing to make sure people know about changes to mission statement and news. Not sure if it necessitates a weekly meeting. Should have them regularly.
Harry:
Mark: have had inquiries from an official OFA rep. Interested in doign same thing, reactivating the Obama core for 2010 election.
Harry:
Mark: I would like to invite them to join us, and share what we have done.
Harry:
I think that's a great idea
Harry:
Jim: more people unerstand when I tell them rights don't come from constitution, are natural.
Harry:
Jim: share Mark's discouragement with information loose in the country. But feel optimistic as more and more people all seem to agree that there is something wrong, adn that people have forgotten waht this country is about.
Harry:
Jim: why I want to keep us energized. Keep ball rolling.
Harry:
Glad to hear Jim is so energized! Could you help with management of lists etc. Can sign you (or anyone else) up to twitter accounts, FB, etc.
Harry:
Key is to make it more collaborative. Less top-down.
jon:
hi all just sticking my head into the chat room briefly
Harry:
Jim: can we make it more automated?
Harry:
Jim: writing summary blog can't be automated. At meeting and post meeting stuff needs direction and intervention from someone familiar with the stuff, and the face of Get FISA Right as you said. But pre-meeting stuff, can we automate?
Harry:
Jim: social networks seem to have a lot of tools for saying, 'here's my thing, put it on other networks'.
jon:
just catching up on the log ... agree about the point about being prepared for a session in November/December
jon:
and this also means we need to focus on the election. if we can swing a seat or two people will take us a lot more seriously
Harry:
Agreed Jon. Right now we're discussing a more collaborative way to set up meetings.
Harry:
Jim: I'm on FB regularly. Make myself the appropriate cheat sheets, set in my calendar, can probably do that. Will be period when I cannot, like month of June.
Harry:
Key is to set up a system where week to week people can sign up for what they can ehlp with, i.e. FB, Twitter, OFA list, etc.
Harry:
Ideally they would get into it, do more than necessitated for hte meeting. Especially the case considering they will be acting as face of GFR through this contact.
Harry:
Jim: Korkie is on FB very often.
Harry:
She is on Twitter a lot too.
Harry:
Jim: for FB, as long as you outline for the first week or two exactly what you want, I could get it into the weekly rhythm.
Harry:
It isn't that long to do just a FB event, but it's the combination of each little piece, so that would be helpful
Harry:
Mark: i've paid my dues over 45 years. Receive several hundred emails a day. Usually a question about wanting to do xyz, calling congressman, because I have netwroks on the hill.
Harry:
Mark: the OFA thing I mentioned before. From signals I am getting, they are on the verge of recognizing how profound their mistake was, how Plouffe has near destroyed Obama presidency when he insisted on turning OFA over to DNC.
Harry:
Mark: take that as almost co-equal focus as what we are doing here. This is issue focus. They realize course OFA is on, no chance Obama will be reelected, because they have gone from no direction to misdirection to a majority of people feeling disgusted, and half of them feeling totally betryaed.
Harry:
Mark: have a few months to overcome that in terms of 2010 elections. Different strategy though.
Harry:
Extremely encouraging to hear that they have realized that. If anything, we should commit much more to OFA.
Harry:
Mark says he can help promote meetings via OFA.
Harry:
Obviously we have disagreed with Obama administration a lot, but should wholeheartedly support OFA. If they grow stronger, so does our capacity to reach out through it. Considering we had such success on it, if they are reachign out, it shoudl be to us.
Harry:
Mark: signs that OFA could be shutting down. Designated OFA reps sending action emails to small groups of indvidiuals on various OFA gorups rather than group list serv
Harry:
Mark: taking action plan offline, bothered by that.
Harry:
Jim: if they did shut down, would it be to start a different effort not poisoned by the past?
Harry:
Jim: doesn't precisely trouble me. Once you have gotten co-opted, allowed origianl one to be co-opted, sometimes easier to start over than retrieve things.
Harry:
Either way, we support OFA if htey take it seriously again, or we support new org. Key thoguht is that Obama seems to realize that he needs to take his own social network seriously again.
Harry:
Discussing 9/11 event. Ben Masel: date to do it would be anniversary of Patriot Act, avoid 9/11
Harry:
9/11 and Oct 12 both put us into election fervor...
Harry:
Ben: can ask people to go to tehri own candidate that day. Specifically a presence at the campaign events on teh anniversary
Harry:
Jim: declared intention well up front about making big noise, comes to their advantage for candidates to try and get on our good side. Make positive noise about them rather htan engative.
Harry:
tea partiers planning 9/11 event, could be reason to delay, or added motivaiton to help split the libertarians on that day.
Harry:
Jim: April date is 'patriot day' going back to those principles. Might not be a bad spring target.
Harry:
Finish looking at mission statement, use as reach out to OFA
Harry:
Teach Jim how to do FB events
Harry:
Thursday meetings better for Jim
Harry:
Set up system to collaboratively set up meetings is the key
Harry:
Mark is glad to post meeting info on the OFA lists
Harry:
Go over older email lists (have htey gotten stale?), send lists to Mark
Harry:
Mark: I would rather have a meeting once a month wtih 25 people on the call
Harry:
Key for this week is setting up this system, TBD whether we have a meeting next week, focus on better meetings
Harry:
Ben: went to statehouse. As much as nothing is hapening with Patriot for a year, time to push for a revisit of the wiretap act to add both video surveilance and location tracking
Harry:
Ben: got positive feedback on that earlier from congressman Nadler, chaired constitution subcommittee in the house, and Rep. Baldwin
Harry:
Ben: considering Patriot is a dead issue for the year, could help broaden the scope
Brons:
Mark: What act are we talking about?
Harry:
Harry to try to get in touch with Ben next time I'm in Madison
Harry:
Have to run, see you guys!
Brons:
Ben: The Wire tap Act, which was written befoe the technology was really available.
Harry:
thanks for taking notes Jim on continuing convesation!
