| Ask Your Lawmaker, a project by the Capitol News Connection, offers the chance to submit questions for CNC's journalists to ask Congress. Answers by Senators and Representatives to a variety of questions are on their web site and have been distributed to radio stations around the country. One of our biggest questions is about the timing of debates and votes in the Senate. If Congress acts while the ACLU and EFF's court cases are still active, it's not too late to roll back telecom immunity. On the other hand, with ongoing revelations about the extent and shoddy legal framework for Bush Administration wiretapping, and an Inspectors' General report due in July, there's a risk that these issues won't get a thorough hearing in Congress before the December 31 deadline for voting to sunset PATRIOT Act sections 206 and 215. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a lot of influence here, and I haven't seen any recent reports of what he's thinking. So I decided to ask him. jon |
What are your plans and timeframe for FISA and PATRIOT Act reform legislation? To: Harry Reid Background: After last summer's battle over the FISA Amendment Act, Senator Reid spoke of the possibility of reopening the discussion in the new Congress. Several sections of the PATRIOT Act sunset in December 2009 unless renewed, and Republican House members have already introduced legislation to extend it. While the economy and health care are top-priority issues, civil liberties matter too. With immunity cases and Al-Haramain working their way though the court system and the Obama DOJ continuing Bush Administration policies, the clock is ticking.
