Get FISA right HomeThis is a featured page

We are a proud group of Obama supporters who believe in his call for hope and a new kind of politics. We ask President Obama and the new Congress to reject the politics of fear on national security, and work to get FISA right. If you want to help shape our direction, please join us on Organizing for America,
Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, our
Google discussion group, and our blog. We are currently focused on the Patriot Act reauthorization hearings in Congress. Here's how you can help.

Stop spying logoThe House Judiciary Committee markup of the HR 3845 and 3846 Wednesday, November 4. A broad coalition including EFF, the ACLU, Bill of Rights Defense Committee, the American Library association and many other organizations support this legislation.

There's also the Reyes bill in the House, and the Leahy/Feinstein and Sessions bills in the Senate. So the situation is complex. Stay tuned for more.

The Patriot Act Action Hub and our Twazzup page are the best places to track what's going on.

Please help us fix the PATRIOT Act and FISA.

About Get FISA Right

The "Senator Obama, Please Get FISA Right" MyBo group started organically before a group of volunteers helped it go viral in 2008. Bloggers were undoubtedly instrumental in that effort through their writing----and we need your help again today!

As the MyBo group gained a large following, we used a wiki/collaborative process to create an open letter to Obama. A vast amount of blog coverage begot MSM coverage, and in unprecedented fashion Obama responded to the group both on MyBo and on the Huffington Post. We lost the legislative battle--and the content of Obama's response was not what we were hoping for--but we were successful at helping change the national debate, attaining Obama's attention, and successfully opening up a direct line of communication with him.

Now, with PATRIOT Act and FISA reform coming up, many of us are back and ready to expand upon last summers' successes. Please join us Organizing for America, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Wetpaint. Here's the latest from our blog

I suggest that the group consider getting behind the coalition effort (led in part by the ACLU) to revive the US Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB). Among the signatories are Pelosi and Reid, as well as many other key members of Congress. I suggest we do this because we need a victory, even if a minor one, even if in affiliation with other organizations or individuals we don't exactly condone, in order to stay together and viable. Here's the letter the Coalition sent to Obama earlier this year:

We can debate alternative courses of action to address various slights until we're blue in the face, but each week that goes by shrinks our numbers. Soon we'll be a few folks hocking each other about this or that social ill, like codgers on a park bench, while events pass them by. Not on our watch! Let's get relevant.

I do like the idea of prodding Dodd to take this line of policy up as his legacy project during his last months in office and beyond. Make that our longer range goal -- at least until financial reform is done -- and getting the PCLOB reestablished our short-range goal. That's my suggestion.

JoanM NRA reaction to Patriot Act 0 Sep 28 2009, 7:05 AM EDT by JoanM

From an NRA member: The big thing at the moment is the attempt to bar anyone on the terrorist list, which is now 1 million names from owning a gun. Most of the people on the list are people with similar names and the list is wildly inaccurate.

This supports the idea that the Patriot Act needs to be cleaned up and improved and moved to JUSTICE!
